Automated Meter Reading

Introducing Automated Meter Reading From ESP Natural Gas

In the next several months ESP will install automated meter reading (AMR) equipment on all natural gas meters to ensure more accurate readings at a lower cost to the customer. The modification to each customer’s meter will be quick and simple, will require no disruption in service, and does not require the customer to be present.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is being installed?
An Encoder Receiver Transmitter (ERT) to measure gas consumption and transmit it via radio frequency to our data software.

Who will do the installation?
Contract employee who can be identified by the ESP Contractor logos on their vehicles will do the majority of installations. The employees work for VSI, a subcontractor of Sensus, the company partnering with ESP to provide meter-reading software and automated services.

Will I have to pay for the device on my meter?
You will not be charged for the modification to your meter.

How long will the installation take?
Installation should take about 15 minutes. However, the process could take longer should plants or other objects block the meter. Any help to allow us easier access to your meter will be appreciated.

Will the installation interrupt my gas service?
No.

What if during the installation ESP determines I need meter maintenance or replacement?
Should that occur, you would be contacted to coordinate a time for that work. Meter maintenance or replacement could result in a brief interruption of gas service, and our technicians will assist you with any pilot lighting needs you may have.

Will I need to be home when you install the AMR device?
In most cases no. However, should we have trouble gaining access to your meter, we will leave a door tag requesting you contact us for an appointment. To make it as convenient for the customer as possible, in such a case we will often request that on the date of your appointment you help us gain access before you leave for the day.

Will the radio frequency interfere with my television, phones, wireless Internet access or invisible fence?
No. The radio frequency used by our equipment is very different from that needed for any appliances or services you might have. Also, the ERT issues only a seconds-long radio “message” on the infrequent occasion it is “awakened” by our AMR software.

What information will be transmitted?
The meter identification number and a reading of how much Natural Gas has been consumed since the last reading.

Is my account information secure?
Yes. No personal customer information is transmitted, only meter readings and meter numbers.

Will I notice a change in my service after AMR is installed?
The only significant change to your utility service will be that, once the AMR system is operating, meter readers will not need to visit your property each month to collect the meter readings. Service personnel may visit the meter periodically to confirm proper operation or perform routine maintenance.

Will this affect my billing date?
There is a possibility your billing date will change but ESP will make every effort to minimize any impact AMR will have on such dates.

Will this affect my automatic bank draft or equalized payment plan (EPP) arrangements?
No. Your automatic bank draft or EPP will not be affected.

Will I need to maintain the AMR meter?
No. ESP is responsible for all maintenance. As a matter of fact, we ask that you not tamper with the devices or hang objects from them. Should you think something is wrong with the equipment, please call (850) 474-5300.

If you have questions, please call ESP at (850) 435-1800, Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
